Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: Speed, Quality, Looks, Size

Weakness: Price, Dead Pixels

The Monitor is Very well designed and shows NO signs of ghosting. I have been gaming on the monitor all week and watching movies and it runs flawlessly. Very thin and lightweight with a sturdy stand. It only has a 75mhz refresh rate that is locked. A little on the expensive side, It arrived with 1 dead pixel...which isn't a huge deal. Highly recommend this monitor.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: Excellent visual quality, no noticeable "ghosting", vibrant color reproduction, and clean design.

Weakness: Limited height adjustment.

In the week that I have owned this monitor I have become enamored with it. Compared to my CRT this monitor saves a ton of space, consumes 200w less energy, runs cooler, and provides truer color reproduction! After calibration with the programs Samsung includes on the driver disk the monitor displays a very true black (not a "backlit" black)and a truly luminous white. The display is crisp in digital mode playing games at either 1024x768 or 1280x1024. There is no noticeable quality loss. There is also no ghosting or after-image in fast paced games. Photoshop/Illustrator users will be delighted by the color reproduction and the crispness of line that this high quality monitor provides. I plan to purchase another to use in a dual display setup! =)

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: bright, slim, excellent contrast

Weakness: none

This is an amazing flat panel. It's also an incredible steal with the current rebates available from various retailers. There were ZERO dead pixels and it even comes with a mounting bracket. Simply amazing.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: Sleek, clean look, design, great for games, simplicity, and softwares.

Weakness: Can't adjust the height as much as I would like it to, button layouts, and price

This is my first LCD monitor purchase and I am glad I got this one. With it's 12ms response time, it's great for games and movies. I have yet to see any ghosting. I really like the simplicity of the design and clean look it has. The software called Magic Tune helps you adjust the brightness, contrast and etc so you can achieve the best settings for the monitor. There is also a button you can press on the monitor to adjust the settings for games, web browsing, and etc on the fly.

Some things that it lacks or I didn't like, was that you can't adjust the height as much as I wanted it to. I had to actually use a couple of books to raise the height, so that I would be looking straight at the monitor and not looking down at it. Also, the button layouts are a little different than what I'm used to. The power button is in the center of all the buttons, which I sometimes press on accident when trying to adjust my settings. Also, the buttons are located underneath the LCD, so it looks hidden and you might have trouble reading the symbols to figure what button does what. This is not really a big deal, but a nuisance. Once you get used to it, it'll be easy to adjust.

Overall, great monitor. I recommend this to everyone, especially for gamers because of no ghosting.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: Remarkable color and refresh rate makes all visuals look amazing compared to CRTs. The design is striking and minimal, easing desktop clutter and making it perfect for a dual monitor setup.

Weakness: Some mention a lack of pivot function, but for designers and gamers, that's a non-issue. This monitor is too good to have its assets wasted on heavy text editing.

Photoshop and Illustrator work is a joy on this screen. It really comes alive in FPS and driving games. There's no more ghosting than a good CRT. The hardware scaling is also nearly perfect(the monitor's ability to run lower than native resolution).
This monitor is the BMW of 17" LCDs. End of story.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: Fast response time. Vesa compliant. Digital/analog interfaces. Great for games (for an LCD monitor). Fabulous design complemented by an ultra-thin silver bezel.

Weakness: Does not have CRT response times, thus some ghosting may be possible. no pivot function.

I had spent several months looking at lcd monitors offering the best combination in features and styling. This is a great monitor for games, at a decent price. It features one of the highest response times on the market (12ms), which acts to minimize ghosting effects. The monitor features dvi input for today's high end graphics cards, as well as the traditional analog input.
The fabulous design and outstanding ergonomics of this monitor make it an excellent choice for style-oriented people. Other contenders were the viewsonic vp171 (has 16 ms and digital/analog) and the benq FP767-12 (has 12 ms but only analog connector) Don't take my word for it though, go look at these monitors in person. Let your eyes be the judge.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: 12 ms response times. No ghosting. Great colors.

Weakness: Price. Not very height adjustable. Stuck pixels.

This is a gamers' dream. A 17 inch LCD with no ghosting, even on Unreal Tournament 2004. Mine did come with one dead pixel, right in the middle of the screen. I have exchanged it for a new one. Replacement had a stuck pixel and another replacement had a stuck pixel!!! Three different LCDs, all with stuck pixels. Obviously, Samusung tests the ones that they send out for review because, all of the reviews that I read, not one had a stuck pixel on their review LCD.
Pricey. I just wish that you could make it taller. The height adjustment is only about three inches. It would've been cool if it had the one button like the 173P instead of the "hidden" buttons on the bottom of the front bezel.
There are better 12 ms LCDs out there now.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: Excellent color accuracy, thin bezel works great for dual screen use. Comes with wall mount bracket. No noticable ghosting. Fantastic monitor for 3Dstudio and Photoshop. Digital and Analog connections

Weakness: ummm..........?

This is the best 17" LCD flat panel I have found anywhere. Viewsonic VP171 was a close second, but the 172x is a cut above. I am running 2 side by side, wall mounted and it is fantastic. The inclusion of wall mount brackets saved me around $50 to $75 between the two displays.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: Response time, thin bezel, colors, brightness, overall appearance.

Weakness: Price. Also, a screen pivot feature would have been nice.

With the exception of one tiny flaw, this is the best flat panel I've seen so far - for gaming at least. What's the flaw? The dead pixel. A red one, too - the worst kind. It's my hope that I'll be able to get over this, however it's all I can focus on now. (literally) Although all reviews I've read about the 172X said it didn't come with a DVI cable, apparently it now does. For all those people trying to find a Prophetview 920 DVI, just give up your quest - and go with the Samsung, just buy it in a store so you can check for dead pixels before you buy. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars because of the pixel if I could, however, I was aware of the policy beforehand and simply decided to take my chances.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: Narrow & Slim , Good Design , 12ms , DVI , Good Color & Contrast .

Weakness: Low Height , Bright Edge , Ghosting in Edge , No DVI Cable .

10 days ago i bought a 172x , after using it in home i found a stuck pixel , a blue one ! but for use the garanty it must had over 3 dead pixel , then i change it for no dead pixel pricy ( over 35$ ! ) , the 2nd one also had dead pixel , at last the 3rd one had no dead or stuck pixel . its great monitor but in right down edge , screen is brighter , its not good for graphists , also it has ghosting in edge , but just in edge ! i use analog cable , i think if i use DVI the ghosting improves and it has better color & contrast .

Samsung SyncMaster 172X-Silver 17" LCD Monitor

Strengths: very thin and modern looking, crisp clear colors (especially black), no ghosting with games, low price and zero dead pixels

Weakness: none found yet

the king of the 17" LCD's. a world of difference from the 19" CRT that it replaced. I chose to go with a smaller size monitor (17" instead of 19") and get better performance and I'm very happy with my decision.
