Magellan Explorist 100 Portable Navigator

Strengths: Excellent price, quality construction, large display, easy to use, extremely accurate (WAAS enabled)

Weakness: Takes a while to lock onto satellites from a cold start (approx 2 minutes), no maps, no dataport

I researched dozens of GPSr units here at pricegrabber. I spoke with a lot of friends and compared this unit to other brands on the market. Ultimately, I bought this unit because of the price. I have used it for 4 geocaches and the accuracy is great. It is easy to enter waypoints. I wish it had a dataport and maps.

Magellan Explorist 100 Portable Navigator

Strengths: Inexpensive, Good position accuracy, Easy to navigate the menus

Weakness: Not a lot of bells and whistles

Very reasonably priced, appears to be well built, and performs very well. As long as you know that it is limited in its functions there is no reason not to like this unit. It's a great choice for a first-time GPS receiver.

eXplorist 100: great for the great outdoors

Strengths: Accurate, long battery life, good features, easy to use and fun as all get out.

Weakness: No roads, points of interest are removed if batteries are left out of the unit for too long.

I purchased this unit a little over a month ago from Amazon.com. I bought the unit with the intention of using it for mountain climing in the Oregon Cascades. One of the first things I did was go to a favorite site, www.summitpost.org, and look up the Lat/Long for some area mountains. The lat/long. coordinates were in a different format than my GPS, however, I was able to switch the Lat/ Long. on the GPS to be in the same format as the coordinates I had access to. Now when I go hiking to a coordinate I have never been to, I can use the ETE function (estimated time enroute) to basically tell me how many mins/secs I have until I hit the summit.

The unit also "tracks" wherever you go with great detail. I was also quite suprised at how accurately it tracks MPH and trip distance. I took this thing on a 25 mile bike ride last Saturday and it was step for step with my cateye - while it was in my pocket.

One last thing - the WAAS signal is hecka cool - gets you to within 7 feet of your "actual" position.

For the $90.99 I paid at Amazon.com (w/free shipping), I could not ask for anything more.
