The content providers (cable, satellite, etc.) are building in content protection called HDCP. They want you to rent a DVR or use Tivo which records to a temporary device as opposed to a permanent device DVD. I have talked to many tech support staff, read many blogs, and there is no way around it. The Crutchfield tech support staff were very knowledgeable but the problem was not resolved. I returned the unit just like all the others."

No phone support from Toshiba Feb. 2013

We purchased this Toshiba product in January 2013 and cannot get it to record on DVD. We called Toshiba 3 or 4 times and No help. Avoid this product.

Performs exactly as advertised

I've been using the VHS tape/DVD player/recorder for two months now and wanted to exercise the majority of the features before reviewing, including re-recording from my cable DVR. What I discovered is recording material while it's being broadcast or from a DVR recorded program is equally as easy as long as the video source is the same resolution as the DVD's resolution (standard broadcast)....

I've been using the VHS tape/DVD player/recorder for two months now and wanted to exercise the majority of the features before reviewing, including re-recording from my cable DVR. What I discovered is recording material while it's being broadcast or from a DVR recorded program is equally as easy as long as the video source is the same resolution as the DVD's resolution (standard broadcast). Attempting to record high definition source will generate an error not described in the owner's manual. Overall, a good product that plays prerecorded tapes and DVD's with good quality and will attempt to upconvert the image quality through the HDMI output when used. Recording quality is selectable and easy to choose through the controller. Also, the option of taking partially recorded DVD's from other recorders and converting them to be compatible with this recorder is a nice addition.
